One of the common problems shared by guest rooms, staff dorms and student housing is the low square footage and high turnover. All furnishings should be given a job to do. A bed which is used for 16 hours a day and only used for sleep for 8 hours is inefficient. Space saving bed frame designs eliminate this problem, as they can provide storage, loft a bed or fold away when not in use. The right bed frame can actually increase usable space by 30% to 50% for contractors setting up dormitories, hotel staff quarters, or university housing. This is how contemporary designs can accomplish that.
1. Under Bed Storage Integration
Unless you slide a storage box under a standard bed frame, a space under a bed frame is a space that's lost. Space saving designs ensure that it is designed with storage in mind and accessible. You should try to find bed frames that have:
Drawers on casters that roll out easily, even over carpet. A separate dresser can be substituted by two to four large drawers.
Lift-up mechanisms that raise the mattress platform. Gas struts actually lift the entire sleeping area to reveal a large storage compartment for suitcases, seasonal bedding, or sports equipment.
Open cubbies (without drawers) for easy access to shoes, books, or laundry baskets.
Guest rooms have extra linens and pillows under the bed, without the use of a large linen closet. When storing clothes or equipment for use in staff dorms, lift off seasonal items. Student housing: open cubbies have books and backpacks.
Deshunyi's bed selection is equipped with platform beds that have built-in drawer options. We have a wood & metal series and storage rack series with the same theme of making the most of the cubic space. We produce under bed storage components which slide smoothly for thousands of cycles, in two facilities: 120,000m² in Huizhou with an investment of 350 million USD, and 100,000m² in Vietnam, with an investment of 350 million USD.
2. Loft and Bunk Configurations for High Density
If there is very little space on the ground, the answer is to go upwards. Loft beds are also designed to be placed high off the ground to allow a desk, sofa or wardrobe to be placed beneath. Bunk beds stack two beds vertically, allowing two people to sleep in the footprint of one. Consider for staff dorms and for student accommodation:
Twin over twin bunk beds with full length guardrail and ladder access.
Loft beds with integrated desk and shelving, a complete desk and shelving under the mattress.
Triple bunk configurations for seasonal worker housing (not for permanent housing, but useful for camps)
Safety is paramount. By ASTM or EN standards, all loft/bunk designs have a minimum guard rail height of 5 inches above the mattress, design of the ladder, and structural stability. Certified bunk and loft bed series are included in Deshunyi's bed series. We have a workforce of 1800 staff, and make around 3,000 (40 foot) containers a year, all designed to make the best use of space while maintaining safety.
3. Fold Away and Wall Hung Mechanisms
If the bed is used in different spaces, (home office by day and guest room by night), then it is perfect to have a bed that can be covered when not in use. There are two predominant ways of space savings design:
Murphy beds (wall beds): These are a mattress that is mounted on a platform that pivots up and down to a cabinet that is flush with the wall. The front of the cabinet may be used as a shelf, a desk surface or even a sofa when closed.
Fold down ottoman beds: Folds up to a bench or console, compact storage unit.
Murphy beds need to be anchored to the wall and have adequate space overhead for the pivot to move around. They are perfect for hotel guest rooms which convert into meeting rooms and staff apartment rooms in which one room doubles as a bedroom and living room.
Our wall bed mechanisms are attached to our bed frames and come from specialized suppliers, and are included in Deshunyi's wood & metal series. These systems include detailed installation drawings and load ratings for contractors who specify the systems.
4. Slim Profile Frames for Tight Clearances
In some cases, the space constraint is not the actual square footage itself, but rather a narrow doorway, hallway or elevator car. Bulky side rails are not easily slid under existing thick bed frames or into dormitory towers that do not provide easy access.
Instead Slim Profile Bed Frames solve this by:
Detachable side rails Foldable side rails for reduced shipping and handling size
Split frame designs (parts left and right that bolt together at work site)
Low profile headboards and footboards which add visual space but not square footage of floor area.
When it comes to student housing in converted historic buildings, slim profile frames are often the only choice. Knock down frames make moves easier with staff dorms that have narrow corridors.
Deshunyi Vietnam industrial park (100,000 m² all opened in 2024) was developed taking logistical needs internationally, particularly for slim profile bed frames which have to be compactly packed. With an annual output value of 500 million RMB, we offer both custom and standard sizes. Bed frames can be constructed to fit through any standard sized doorway for contractors who have restrictions.
